September 28, Zhemgang: Zhemgang observed the 11th World Rabies Day in Panbang under Ngangla geog with a theme “Rabies: Zero by 2030.” The day was marked with a walkathon from Panbang town to Sonamthang Central School (SCT), talk shows on rabies to students of SCT and public, quiz session for students and a debate for public.
The event was organised in Panbang considering the recent rabies outbreak which was first reported on September 3 causing deaths of 14 stray dogs and 3 cattle including 5 human bite cases. The day created awareness about the impact of rabies on humans and animals, provided advice on how to prevent the disease and garner unprecedented supports from the communities to help the livestock and public health sectors in eliminating rabies in future.
It was organised by the Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC), Dzongkhag Livestock Sector and Dzongkhag Health Sector in Zhemgang jointly with the National Centre for Animal Health and the Department of Livestock.
