The World Forestry Day with theme on “how do forest contribute to our water needs” will be celebrated on World Water Day 2016 on 22nd March 2016 jointly by Department of Forests & Park Services (DoFPS) and National Environment Commission at Samtengang Central School, Wangdue Phodrang. To mark the occasion, DoFPS will be launching Integrated Watershed Management Plan for Baychhu Watershed under Wangdue Dzongkhag. The plan document is developed in an integrated and collaborative manner involving all relevant entities at the watershed level. The approach will be gradually scaled up to cover other degraded watersheds in the entire country based on environmentally sustainable, economically efficient, and socio-culturally equitable and acceptable code of practices. The approach adopted in developing the plan will help in the implementation of National Integrated Water Resource Management Plan (NIWRMP) 2016 developed by NEC.
To commemorate the World Forestry Day, a TV Spot on Watershed Management will also be aired on BBS channel in the evening of March 22, 2016.
The DoFPS will also launch National Payment for Environmental Services (PES) Framework and Field Guide on the same day. In line with Water Act of Bhutan and National Forest Policy, the department has adopted PES as one of the financial mechanism to conserve and protect watersheds in the country.
The day will be celebrated together with dignitaries from international organizations, representatives from Non Governmental Organizations, Autonomous Agencies, Dzongkhag Administration and Geog offices under Wangdue Dzongkhag and the communities of three geogs of Kazhi, Nyisho and Phangyuel falling within the Baychhu Watershed in the Punatsangchhu basin.
