November 15-16, Thimphu: Around 35 participants representing the Bhutan Standards Bureau, private sector and business enterprises along with officials from the Ministry came together to consult and finalise the National Organic Standards and Guarantee System.
A resource person from the International Federation for Organic Agriculture Movement facilitated the workshop at the agriculture conference hall.
Presentations covering the role of different institutions in terms of organic management standards and certification, labeling law and consumer protection were shared. Participants also revised the national organic standards of Bhutan and discussed on the terminology used, land allowance, livestock feeding requirements, authorized mutilations and aquaculture. They further discussed about the management of unique identification number for organic operators, criteria for organic processed products, national local assurance system and organic testing for soil and water among others.
