November 2-3, Thimphu: Officials from Livestock, Health and Food Inspectors from across the Dzongkhags attended a two day workshop on “Food Safety Investigation & Food Borne Contamination Investigation” at Chuniding Resort, Serbithang.
The Director General for BAFRA, Mr. Namgay Wangchuk graced the opening ceremony. He emphasised in his opening remarks that consumers have right to access safe and suitable food and its BAFRA’s responsibility to make sure of good food hygiene. He added that it is essential to ensure that the food you and your family eats is safe as poor hygiene procedures can put you at risk causing food poisoning easily. He further shared that way back in 2014-15; BAFRA has come up with two manuals on Food Safety and Food Borne Contamination Investigation which has been lying dormant. He stressed that the food inspectors involved in the field needs stronger procedures and proper system in place.
BAFRA has recognised the importance of Good Food Hygienic and Manufacturing Practices for ensuring the safety and quality of food and the prevention of food borne diseases ever since its designation as the National Food Inspectorate in 2003. The manual developed to lay down a strong foundation for ensuring food hygiene and recommends a preventive approach wherever possible to enhance food safety. Besides, in December 2013, specific categories of food handlers training manuals for food vendors, meat handlers and those working in food processing establishments were developed and ensure need based training.
The workshop was expected to scrutinise and develop a specific manual with the objectives to strengthen the institutional capacity, increasing their awareness levels with a view to ensuring the production, handling, storage and transport of foods with a focus on food safety. It was also expected to help improve the knowledge gained on successful practices of food safety within the country.
