April 20-21, Thimphu: Around 50 Plant Regulatory and Quarantine Officials from all the BAFRA field offices are attending a workshop on “Challenges in Implementation of Seed Rules and Regulations and Plant Quarantine Rules at Chuniding Resort, Serbithang. The Director General for BAFRA, Namgay Wangchuk graced the opening session along with Division Chiefs.

The Seed Rules and Regulations of Bhutan 2006 and Plant Quarantine Rules of Bhutan 2003 are being implemented by BAFRA in the field to ensure quality of agricultural inputs and plant bio-security of the country. However, BAFRA officials are being constantly challenged by the emerging bio-security threats due to factors that are beyond its control. It is therefore, crucial to discuss the issues and concerns together and come up with a proposal for amendment in the provisions of the legislation to facilitate effective enforcement.

Therefore, the workshop is being organised to provide forum for all the relevant officials in the field to exchange experiences, discuss practical problems and work out solution to these problems. The outcome of the workshop will be submitted to the Ministry for endorsement.
