12 May, 2016, Punakha: With the onset of harvesting season for local vegetables, farmers are anxious about markets and price of their produce. Poor linkages between producers and vendors have hindered marketing of home grown vegetables to the domestic markets. To strengthen the linkages between produces and vendors an interaction and vegetable trading day was organised at Khuruthang FCB depot on 12 May, 2016. His Excellency the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo and Director Generals of BAFRA & DoA and senior officials from the Ministry graced the event.
The Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, briefed the gathering about the importance of good linkage between producers and vendors. He highlighted that good relation and association among farmers and vendors will enhance marketing of local vegetables and reduce our dependence on imported vegetables.
Farmers from Punakha and Wangdue Dzongkhags interacted with vegetable vendors of the Centenary Farmers Market (CFM) in Thimphu to sell their vegetables. Substantial volumes of vegetables were marketed on the day. The farmers of the two Dzongkhags marketed a total of over 16 MT of vegetables worth Nu. 1.000 million. The vegetables comprised of potato, chilli, garlic, tomato, beans, slippery gourd, cucumber, carrots and green leaves.
Dasho Dzongdag, Members of Parliament from Punakha, sector heads and Agriculture Extension Agents of Punakha and Wangdue also participated in the program.
