Vegetable competition held in Sarpang

December 17, Sarpang: Farmers from six geogs of Singye, Gakidling, Shompangkha, Dekidling, Samteling and Gelephu participated in a winter vegetable competition and display organised by the Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector, Sarpang during the 108th National Day Celebration.

Thirty six farmers took part in the competition out of which 17 farmers won the prizes. The prizes included green net, knapsack sprayer and other tools which are useful for vegetable production. All the participating farmers were issued water sprinkles.

The event showcased the quality of vegetables, created awareness on availability of winter vegetables to general public and motivated farmers on commercial vegetable production for cash income generation. The event also trained the farmers on post harvest and marketing aspects of different vegetables.

The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Lyonpo, D N Dhungyel of the Ministry of Information and Communication graced the event along with other dignitaries.

This year, Sarpang Dzongkhag has assorted winter vegetable production under 146.92 acres with an expected production of more than 1500 metric tonnes. The main vegetables grown are Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Chili, Beans, Radish, Sag and Tomato among others.
