The Tsirang Forest Division under the Department of Forests & Park Services in collaboration with Dzongkhag Administration has carried out Commemorative plantations in Tsirang and Dagana Dzongkhags coinciding with the Social Forestry Day celebration on 2nd June 2015.
In Tsirang Dzongkhag the Division established a commemorative plantation in an area covering 4 hectares (9.8 acres) above Damphu Public Ground, Kikorthang Geog, basically to convert degraded forest into man-made high value forests by planting local valuable local species like Champ for meeting the future timber requirements.
The Ven. Lam Neten of Tsirang Dratsang graced the opening ceremony as Chief Guest on the Commemorative Plantation cum Social Forestry Day Celebration. Sector Heads of Tsirang Dzongkhag, representatives from different regional offices, Principals, students, Gup, Magmi and tshogpas of the neighboring Geogs and the staff of the Department of Forests & Park Services took part in the tree planting activities.
A special prayer (Kurim) were conducted by Ven. Lam Neten and monk body before the start of tree planting for the success of plantation and wellbeing for the King, Country and the People.
A total of 6400 seedlings of Champ and Walnut were planted in the given sites (700 seedlings planted by the guests and other participants on the day included a Bodhi sapling planted by the Chief Guest. Some bamboo culms and Banana rhizomes were also planted in the water catchment areas.
In Dagana, the staff of Dagana Range carried out a commemorative plantation covering 5 hectares (12.35 acres) barren land at Samey under Tseza Geog. A total of 8000 seedlings of Champ, local tsenden and walnut were planted in the given sites (1000 seedlings planted by 19 Range staff on the day).
The day long tree planting and Social Forestry day celebration was organised as part of the 60th Birth anniversary celebration of our beloved Monarch the 4th DrukGyalpo. The Tsirang Forest Division would like to dedicate this plantation for the long life of His Majesty the 4thDruk Gyalpo under whose leadership Bhutan has gained world recognition in the field of Environment Conservation.
Together with this commemorative plantation, the Tsirang Forest Division has launched the planting of PHPA funded compensatory afforestation in barren and degraded areas covering 40 hectares (98.8 acres) each in Tsirang and Dagana Dzongkhags as follows:
- 20 hectares compensatory afforestation under PHPA II funding at Darachu, Patshaling Geog, Tsirang
- 20 hectares compensatory afforestation under PHPA II at Sirutar, Sergithag Geog, Tsirang
- 20 hectares compensatory afforestation at Namlethang, Tsangkha, Dagana
- 20 hectares compensatory afforestation at Phumsumgang, Geserling Geog, Dagana.
