Trashigang: The Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector, Trashigang organised a Crop competition cum Exhibition for the second time in collaboration with RDC-Wengkhar and Research Development Sub-Centre (RDSC), Khangma coinciding with 108th National Day Celebration at Bidung Lower Secondary School. The opening ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Lyonpo, Dorji Choden, Ministry of Works and Human Settlement.
A total of 38 farmers from Bartsham, Bidung, Phongmey, Radi, Samkhar, Shongphu and Yangnyer geogs took part in the competition. Participants brought eight different types of vegetables and two categories of fruits (orange and walnut). A panel of five judges selected the best entries of vegetables and fruit/nut. About 19 farmers received prizes of agriculture tools and equipment funded by the Sector. The Hon’ble Lyonpo awarded the prizes.
RDC-Wengkhar and RDSC-Khangma also displayed quinoa crop, exotic varieties of citrus fruits and different varieties of nuts (chestnut, hazelnut and walnut) including shitake and oyster mushrooms which were evaluated at the centre for promotion in farmers’ field.
Tashi Norbu of Dangrey, Shongphu geog and several others found these competitions as recognition of their hard work. Bidung farmers bagged the maximum winning prizes followed by Bartsham, Shongphu, Samkhar and Radi. The Sector will be promoting the crop competition as an annual event.
Crop competition and exhibition is an extension methodology to disseminate agricultural technologies and assess crops promoted in the geogs. Besides these, such events are also useful in creating awareness among producers and consumers on the quality and diversity of farm produce. It was initiated by RDC-Wengkhar through the support of HRDP-JICA Project in Trashigang coinciding with the 106th National Day Celebration in 2013.
