27 October 2016, Thimphu: A two day training workshop on Organic Inspection and certification for BAFRA Organic Inspectors was organised by Bhutan Agriculture & Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture & Forests from 23-24 October 2017. The Director General of BAFRA graced the opening session of the Training Workshop.
About 28 BAFRA Officials participated in the Workshop from all the field offices with facilitation from the BAFRA Management at the Head office, and experts from IMO, NPPC, DoFPS and NBC. The BAFRA Inspectors were trained on development of organic standards, criteria for certification, procedure for organic field inspection, Sampling techniques and Soil fertility management as per the standards. Regulatory Framework for Import and Export of plants and plant products encompassing quarantine pest and diseases and Invasive Alien Species. This training will help in building the competencies of Quarantine Inspectors to identify the correct signs and symptoms of pest and diseases and take appropriate phytosanitary measures. Furthermore, the incidence of unlawful trade of endangered species of plants and plants products will be minimised through proficient inspection and certification process. It is crucial that Plant Inspectors are trained periodically and kept abreast with the latest information and know-how to prevent and combat biosecurity risk in appropriate time.
