The Hon’ble Lyonpo’s five Days Sarpang Dzongkhag visit completed

22 January 2020: Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor graced the three day 3rd Foothills Festival held from 16-18th January 2020 at Gelephu organized by the Sarpang Dzongkhag Administration. The Festival showcased and sold various Agriculture, Horticulture and Livestock Products put up by Agri-based entrepreneurs, State Own Enterprise (SOEs) and farmers from 12 Gewogs of the Dzongkhag. Dzongkhag also organized marathons, Bicycle race, traditional games and cultural programmes alongside the festival with attractive prizes.

The three day festival celebrated the foothill Culture, Economy and Landscape with primary objectives;

  • To encourage farmers to optimize the agricultural potential of the Dzongkhag and to curb the importance of agriculture products (by local consumers) which could be domestically grown and supplied by our farmers;
  • To showcase diversity of the Dzongkhag’s culture through the performance of various cultural programs and
  • To promote Sarpang Dzongkhag as a hub for sporting events in the country.

Hon’ble Lyonpo’s presence and interaction with the representatives of farmers and entrepreneurs boosted the Foothill festival, this platform is seen to promote communities awareness and revive traditional food practices and production while enhancing nutrition, local resilience and food security.

On 18th January 2020, Sanam Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor and JICA’s chief representative Kozo Watanabe jointly inaugurated the 41.5m Passang Zam (bridge) over Passangchhu in Gelephu-Trongsa Primary Highway. Hon’ble Secretary, officials from Ministry of Work and Human Settlement (MoWHS) Dasho Dzongdag of Sarpang Dzongkhag, Local Leaders are attended the inauguration.

The bridge will benefit commuters and in particular districts of south-Central region in the transportation of goods, agriculture marketing and trading. Japan based Dai Nippon Construction Company through the JICA Office(Japan’s Grant Aid Project)constructed the bridge, the bridge is one of the four bridges which is being reconstructed as part of the Grant Aid for the Reconstruction Highway No.4.

Lyonpo also attended the closing ceremony of National Highland Development Program Coordination Workshop themed “Promotion, Protect and Preserve yaks and Highlanders”.And also launched the Honey Container for Technology Generation and Dissemination.

On 19 January 2020, Sanam Lyonpo also graced the opening of the 7th Bhutan Taekwondo Federation (BTF) General Assembly at Gelephu.
