April 13, Thimphu: The Dairy Farming Promotion Organisation (DPO) of Thailand handed over the cheese and butter processing equipment of worth USD 5,000 to the Ministry as a gift for the Bhutanese highlanders.
The equipment will be assessed for its performance and if found suitable, the DPO will provide additional sets of equipment. It is expected to improve hygiene in terms of cheese processing method in the country.
According to Tawchu Rabgay, the Livestock Officer, the equipment will be taken probably to Haa for testing in May. He added that two experts from the DPO will be visiting Bhutan to provide hands-on training on equipment handling and see the feasibility of testing procedures.
A delegation of eight members from DPO and Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Thailand was in the country from April 11-14 for handing taking ceremony among others. During the ceremony, the Hon’ble Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji expressed his appreciation to Thailand for their continuous support to Livestock Department in Bhutan.
The Department has been receiving continuous support from Thailand particularly in terms of embryo transfer technology, nutritional laboratory, turkey farming, feed and fodder; poultry, piggery, meat processing plant, dairy and others.
The delegation also reviewed the progress achieved under a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand and Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan signed on 4 September 2010. They further discussed with the Department the possible future collaboration in terms of livestock inputs, dairy product diversification and packaging; dog and canine treatment center; livestock corporate modality etc.
According to the Department, the collaboration with DPO and DLD has been fruitful so far enabling the Bhutanese farmers to take livestock development to higher level and help achieve self -sufficiency in livestock products.
