  • Sanam Lyonpo Calls for Greater Collaboration to Control Emerging Diseases

December 9, 2013: The Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji addressed the closing of the “South Asia Regional One Health Symposium” on 6th December, 2013 at Paro. In his address, he said that, “we live in a region where emerging animal and zoonotic diseases continue to pose serious challenges to our people’s livelihoods, human health and food security.” Given the economic situation, lack of resources and increasing human population, it would be costly for countries to control emerging diseases in isolation and therefore “ a collaborative approach at all level is needed” said the Lyonpo.

The Hon’ble Lyonpo urged the participants to use the “One Health Concept” as a strategic tool and guiding principle to deal with and respond to zoonotic diseases. Lyonpo said that the countries would be in better position to deal with emerging diseases if resources and expertise available with human and animal health sectors are shared.  He said that the symposium was timely and appropriate given the urgency to institute and operationalise the One Health Initiative in the Region. The South Asia Regional One Health Symposium was organized jointly by Massey University, New Zealand in collaboration with Department of Livestock, MoAF and Department of Public Health, MoH at Hotel Zhiwaling, Paro from 2-6 December, 2013.
