22-27 September, Bumthang: Five participants including two farmers and three officials from Sri Lanka attended training on local dairy products processing upon request from His Excellency, Mr. S.B Dissanayake, the Minister for Higher Education, Sri Lanka.

The training was conducted at the milk processing unit (MPU), Tamshing and RDC-Jakar with resource persons from the National Dairy Development Centre, Yusipang, Haa and Bumthang and the Brown Swiss Farm. Prior to the practical sessions, the participants were taught the basic bio-chemistry of milk and milk products as well as procedures on conducting platform milk tests. Lessons on the production of butter and cheese including the operation of equipments were also provided.

The participants then put their theoretical knowledge to use at MPU with hands on practical sessions in conducting platform milk tests and production of local butter and cheese. The practical sessions included the production of butter using improved production practices as well as production of butter and datshi using the traditional household methods. The participants were also taken on a field visit to the Cheese Processing Unit in Bathpalathang where they experienced small scale production of hard, soft and local cheese by private entrepreneurs. They were then taken to the Brown Swiss Farm for a demonstration on hand milking techniques and machine milking practices.

An introductory course on gouda cheese production was also conducted at the MPU in Tang geog where participants were involved in the hands on production of gouda cheese.Participants were also provided with a one day course on the production of yogurt at the Mini Dairy Plant, Wangchutaba along with practical demonstration on the same.

The participants will leave the country on 3 October 2014.
