June 2, Thimphu: With the theme “Plant trees for Green Bhutan” the Dzongkhag Forestry Sector, Thimphu Dzongkhag celebrated Social Forestry Day at Genekha Lower Secondary School (GLSS), Mewang geog, by planting 1000 different species of trees- cupressus, dogwood, oak and few ornamental species- around the school compound to mark the day which coincides with the Coronation Day of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
Dasho Dzongdag, Thimphu Dzongkhag graced the occasion as a Chief Guest in presence of senior officials from Department of Forests and Park Services, staffs and students of GLSS and other officials. The day was also marked with the reading out the Message of His Excellency Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji of the Ministry of Agriculture & Forests followed by the Chief Guest expressing the importance of the day and the message that “Forests play an Integral part for the Sustenance of all Living Beings”.
To make the day more entertaining, a debate competition on “Modernisation-a thread to environment” was organized amongst the school teachers and a dance competition among the students. The winners and runners up were awarded certificates.
The main idea of organising such an event was to give a common platform to the students to come together and express themselves about the conservation of environment with confidence and emphasised that such practice should be followed more often by other schools as well.
Social Forestry Day has been celebrated widely across all schools and institutions in Bhutan since 1985. What initially started as a tree planting program to encourage public participation has now evolved into an important component of Bhutan’s forest management system.
