June 2, Thimphu: Coinciding with the Coronation day of His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo today, the day is also celebrated as Social Forestry Day. Thousands of seedlings were planted throughout the country. People from all walks of life came together to celebrate the day by planting trees as a tribute to His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
In Thimphu, plantation was carried out at several places such as Kuenselphodrang; above Samarzingkha; and Ludrong Memorial Garden. Hon’ble Members of Parliament from both houses led by Hon’ble Tshogpon, Hon’ble NC Chairperson, Hon’ble Opposition Leader and Hon’ble Agriculture Minister planted around 250 oak seedlings in the recently burnt area at Debsi while DeSuups and foresters carried out plantation in other areas.
Speaking to the gathering of DeSuups and foresters at the Kuenselphodrang plantation site, the Hon’ble Agriculture and Forests Minister, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, expressed his gratitude to His Majesty the King for the noble initiative of the DeSuung program which immensely benefits the Ministry besides others. “DeSuups have immensely helped us in fighting forest fires, cordyceps duty and plantation activities. Hence, I take this opportunity to thank each and every DeSuup not just in Thimphu but in all the twenty dzongkhags.” added Hon’ble Lyonpo.
Meanwhile, in Punakha and Wangdue, plantation was carried out at Chimipang, another fire burnt area by 500 participants consisting of foresters, DeSuups, CNR teachers and students, staff of Aman Kora, while in Bumthang plantations was carried out to mark the day at Kurjey by foresters and DeSuups.
Mongar saw plantation of trees at a place called Chompa by similar group of people together with scout members of Mongar and Yakgang HSS while also in Mongar, small school children of remote Daksa CPS in Gongdue gewog also planted saplings.
Further east, Trashigang initiated mass plantation at Chazam while tree species such as Teak, Champ, Ficus and fruit and bamboo species were planted at Reshore in Samdrup Jongkhar. To mark the day, 27 species of Pteridophytes (ferns) were planted in their nature trail for outdoor learning by Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary in Trashiyangtse.
In Samtse, in addition to plantation in several areas, foresters along with Sengdhen School, and Dorokha Dungkhag officials and Tarayana members planted about 6000 tree cypress saplings in 12 acres in villages of Jigme, Singye, Wangchuck members were also involved.
More than 3000 seedlings consisting of mixed broadleaved species were planted in Zhemgang with fund support provided by MHPA.
Similarly, the tree planting marked the celebration in the other remaining Dzongkhags by foresters, DeSuups, Schools, Institutions, community members and individuals.
