October 5, Thimphu: A seminar was held at the Rochog Phel Hotel on a theme of this year’s World Food Day (WFD), “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development”.
The seminar was aimed to educate the panelists who will participate in a WFD themed panel discussion which will be telecasted from October 15-17 on the national television. The panel will reach the message and the government interventions to a wider audience and educate the general public and youths on rural urban migration, food and nutrition security, employment and rural development.
Various theme related papers from the School Agriculture Program (SAP), Policy and Planning Division (PPD), Department of Agriculture (DoA), Department of Livestock (DoL) and Department of Employment and Human Resources (DE&HR) along with Tarayana Foundation were presented.
SAP highlighted its objectives and major activities to encourage students in farming while PPD shared the Ministry’s overall strategies on youth employment opportunities. DoA and DoL presented their activities and opportunities that are relevant to youths and school leavers through agriculture and livestock enterprises.
DE&HR focused on the Guaranteed Employment Program initiated in July 2014 as a strategic response to youth unemployment such as Overseas Employment Scheme, Direct Employment Scheme and Youth Employment Scheme among others. Tarayana Foundation shared linking its various programmes with food security and rural development focusing on the youth based success stories. Various discussions were also held covering relevant issues.
Students and focal SAP teachers from Thimphu along with relevant officials attended the seminar. It was organised by SAP and the Department of School Education (DSE) with fund support from WFP. This year, WFD will be held in Tsirang on October 16.
