August 9, Bumthang: Last year on December 9, to commemorate the 10 years of glorious reign of His Majesty The King, the noble initiative of nation-wide cleaning campaign was carried out. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests took towards perpetuity to continue it every 9th of the month led by the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS). Cleaning campaign along with awareness programs are conducted in respective areas by various offices under DoFPS to sensitise the general public on the importance of waste management and mobilise the community towards achieving the goal of clean Bhutan.
Coinciding with the Dzongkhang tour, the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo and senior officials from the Ministry joined the cleaning campaign. Prior to the campaign, Lyonpo in his speech to the local residents emphasised to strive making Bumthang an exemplary Dzongkhag with its cleanliness and eventually towards cleaner and greener Bhutan.
He stressed on joint effort and sense of ownership that needs to be instilled in all individual’s mind to confront the waste management challenges. He also informed the general public that waste management is one of the priority activities of the Ministry and considering the importance of this program, the Parliament also enacted and endorsed the Waste Prevention and Management Regulation, 2012. The Department after creating awareness for almost a year will henceforth impose penalty to defaulters as per the provisions of the act.
The Divisional Forest Office along with Wangchuck Centennial National Park, UWICER, RNR Sectors and Regional Offices and Dzongkhag Administration organised the cleaning campaign. The campaign collected an approximately 10 tonnes of waste.
