March 12, Thimphu: Dr. Eklabya Sharma, the ICIMOD’s Deputy Director General paid a call on to the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor.
During the meeting, Dr Eklabya extended his appreciation for Bhutan’s valuable support in organising the ICIMOD’s 49th Board of Governor Meeting successfully last year. He assured to extend its continued commitment to Bhutan.
Dr. Eklabya also shared about the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment report which highlights areas such as climate, livelihood, gender, natural resources, governance and others. The report comprehensively assess the current state of knowledge of the Hindu Kush Himlaya region, increase the understanding of various drivers of change and their impacts, address critical data gaps and develop a set of evidence-based and actionable policy solutions and recommendations.
The meeting further highlighted the ICIMOD’s projects in Bhutan including the Kanchenjunga Landscape, home stay and ecotourism. Other areas such as organic farming, cardamom, conservation, water shortage and global warming issues were also discussed.
Bhutan is a founding member of ICIMOD and the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests currently serves as its Board Chairman. The Ministry also serves as the ICIMOD’s focal agency in Bhutan.
