25 September – 4 October, 2020: More than 1 million runners participated for the WILD RUN campaign for Tigers, Elephants and Pangolin. A tiger from Bhutan, Tendrel Zam was featured in the Adidas Runtastic app along with Adjany, an elephant, and Pamoja, Pangolin. Tendrel from Bhutan has the highest competitors with 565,197 runners, followed by Pamoja with 308, 892 participants and Adjany with 145, 430 participants.
“I was little worried that the goal of 1 million runners being not met as only two days of the competition was left. But during the final day of the competition, we had many people signing up and that helped us to meet our goal” said Lobzang Dorji, the Director of Forests and Park Services.
The objective of the RUN WILD campaign was to give a voice to 1 million species that are under threat to extinction, at the UN General Assembly Biodiversity Summit. “We are 1 million runners in favor of a more sustainable planet where humans, animals, and everybody else on the web of life can thrive” according to Runtastic.
Here in Bhutan, many foresters, students, Bhutan run clubs, Civil Servants and others have participated in RUN WILD with Tendrel competition for the last 10 days. The story of Tendrel Zam was featured in the UN General Assembly Biodiversity Summit and we are very happy to be part of this. According to Tshering Tempa (PhD), Head of the Bhutan Tiger Center (BTC), the predator prey dynamic project with BTC funded by Bhutan Foundation provided information on Tendrel and UNEP helped to get the platform on Adidas runtastic to tell this beautiful story of tigers and our conservation effort.
The Bhutan Tiger Center, Department of Forests and Park Services thank all participants for taking up this competition and giving a voice to many species. We also thank all our conservation partners for helping us to secure the future of charismatic species like tigers in the mountains of Bhutan.
