The Regional Director of the International Cooperative Alliance for Asia and the Pacific Region (ICA-AP), Mr Balasubramanian Iyer, accompanied by the Secretary, ICA-AP Youth Committee, arrived in the country on 10th January, 2015, to attend the National Youth seminar titled “Youth Cooperation for the young, by the young” held on 11th January with a participation of more than 150 youth, government officials, officials from International Organizations and Non-Profit Organizations. The event was organized by Bhutan’s Youth Committee Member of ICA-AP with support from ICA-AP, New Delhi and Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF).
The program was mainly organized to create awareness on youth cooperatives as youth are the future of the nation and what with increasing unemployment in the country, cooperative enterprises could be the future of our youth. The program also highlighted the role of the ICA in Bhutan’s cooperative movement since it’s registration as an associate member of the ICA in July 2013.
During his short stay in Bhutan, the Regional Director also had the opportunity to meet H.E. Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, the Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. He also visited the DAMC office where he expressed the desire of the ICA in further collaboration and provision of technical and financial support especially in areas that will empower women and youth cooperatives/groups. Emphasizing on the youth and their role in the cooperative movement, the team also visited the two B-Coop shops in Thimphu, one of which is operated by the Youth Business Cooperative (YBC).
Since the DAMC became an associate member of the ICA in 2013, 17 individuals (including staff of the DAMC, DoA, DoL and Cooperatives) have participated in various capacity building programme with support from ICA.
