January 21-23, Phuentsholing: A three days training on general poultry management and poultry farm bio-security were imparted to the poultry focal extension officers from the 20 Dzongkhags.
During the session, Dr. Karma Wangdi, the Program Director for the National Poultry Development Centre (NPDC) highlighted the overview of Bhutan’s poultry sector growth and its socio-economic impact to the country and its farming communities. He also stressed about the self-sufficiency level of eggs and chicken through domestic production and the opportunity that the poultry farming communities could reap through which Bhutan could achieve self-sufficiency in poultry and poultry products and millions of rupee outflow from country can be saved. He further highlighted the challenges and limitations that needs to be countered to realise the set goals and ensure food and nutrition security in the country in future.
The training mainly focused on farm feasibility, chick management, feeding and lighting program, management related disease/disorders; poultry farming economics, poultry farm bio-security and poultry diseases. Further, the participants were trained on writing a project proposal and preparing planning program. It also provided them a platform to share their views and issues for discussion.
Most of the participants were overwhelmed with the training program and materials. Many of them requested the similar training for other field colleagues with increased training duration and more practical sessions.
The training was organised by NPDC with budget support from GoI tied project. The NPDC management would like to acknowledge the entire resource persons for facilitating the training.
Meanwhile, NPDC is planning to replicate similar training in the coming years.
