The new potato variety introduced from International Potato Center, Lima, Peru has high Iron and Zinc content and also rich in Vitamin C. It is a red variety and oval in shape which is preferred by farmers and export market. It also has good chipping quality. New variety has a yield potential of more than 11mt /ac which is more than double the existing national average. The variety is expected to help address the malnutrition situation in the young children as it is one of the most preferred food items among children.
Similarly, two upland paddy varieties have also been accepted for release. One of the new varieties is local selection (Zangthi 2) from Zangthi Village in Samdrup Jongkhar and other one is introduced from Nepal. Both the varieties have red grains and have yield potential as par with the normal season paddy.
VRC also accepted the release of two mustard varieties Yusi Peka 15 & Yusi Peka 1 introduced from Bangladesh and Nepal. The two new varieties will address the varietal need for sub-tropical and temperate agro-ecological zones and would enhance oilseed production and self-sufficiency ratio.
Bhutanese farmers now would have one more alternative option to enhance income with the acceptance for release of Dragon fruit. It is expected to benefit large number of farmers as the new fruit has wide adaptability ranging from 300 m to 1500 m asl. The dragon fruit is comparatively easy to grow and requires low inputs. It is considered a health food given high contents of vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants.
