• Training workshop on ABS Regime and ABS Toolkit

    22nd June 2018: A training workshop on ABS Regime with a special focus on the ABS toolkit was held at the ConferenParticipants from BAFRA, Thimphu with Honorable Director Generalce Hall of the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) for the BAFRA officials of Thimphu on 22nd June 2018 by the National Biodiversity Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. The training workshop was convened to the officials of BAFRA considering their role in the implementation of ABS Regime in the country especially being formalized as one of the designated checkpoints. The BAFRA as a checkpoint is significant in monitoring and tracking the access and utilization of the Bhutanese genetic resources through physical verification at the designated exit points such as airports and land ports.

    The training Partiicpants from BAFRA , Paro International Aiportworkshop covered an overview of the national and international conventions, protocols and legal framework on biodiversity and ABS such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Nagoya Protocol on ABS, ABS Policy of Bhutan 2015, the rationale for the development of ABS toolkit, and comprehensively delved into the ABS Regime in the country. Further, a documentary on ABS was screened and a copy of ABS Toolkit was distributed to the participants.

  • Statistics on supply of timber, stones and sand by NRDCL as of December 2017

    Natural Resources Development Cooperation Limited (NRDCL) is a state-owned enterprise, mandated to manage and sustainably supply of timber, stone and sand at affordable prices to the public. It was first established inrdcln 1979 and presently it has 6 regional offices with 21 unit offices. The timber is mainly extracted from the operational forest management units. Forest Management Unit (FMU) is State Reserved Forest (SRF) land brought under scientific forest management regime based on the principle of sustainable management of resource utilization and conservation pertaining to timbers, non-wood forest products (NWFP), ecosystem services and wildlife conservation etc. Apart from the extraction of timber and lopsandtops they are also mandated to replant the felled areas. Similarly, sand and stone are extracted from the Wangdue, Gelephu, Mongar and Phuentsholing accordingly as allotted to NRDCL for a fixed period of years.

    23rd June 2018 is a National Holiday in Bhutan to observe the Birth Anniversary of Guru Rinpoche. The Birth Anniversary is considered a very holy opportunity for the region to come together by recognising and enhancing the shared cultural processes centred on Guru Rinpoche. Guru Rinpoche travelled the length and breadth of the country verifying that Bhutan is indeed a sacred land practicing the teachings of the sacred Mantrayana or Vajrayana tradition.
