• Experts discuss usage patterns of Antimicrobials in animals

    25-27 December, Thimphu: Around 55 officials representing trade, health, custom, drug regulatory, livestock, private sectors and OIE met in a workshop to discuss the usage patterns of Antimicrobials in Animals followed by a seminar on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the private livestock sectors in Bhutan.

    The workshop was organized to understand the current regulating mechanisms of Antimicrobial Use (AMU) in livestock, agriculture and others as well as the roles of stakeholders and the private sector in monitoring the AMU. Issues related to AMR such as lack of adequate infrastructure, insufficient and untimely medicine supply, and coordination among the stakeholders were also discussed.

  • Efforts by Local Governments towards fulfilling Government’s School & Hospital Feeding Program

    With the vision to substitute all food supply to schools and hospitals with locally grown produce, thereby providing ready market access for farmers’ produce, provide students and patients with access to healthy and nutritious food and create employment opportunities for the youth, the School and Hospital Feeding Program (SHFP) was formulated and endorsed by the government in September 2019.

    The SHFP, formulated in a collaborative approach by the Ministry of Agriculture & Forests, Ministry Education, Ministry Health, Ministry of Labour and Human Resources and relevant SOEs, envisions creating a viable food production and distribution system by enhancing food production and establishing business linkages between producers and institutions (schools and hospitals).

  • New community AI centre for Nangmalam

    Pemagatshel: A new community artificial insemination (AI) centre was inaugurated at Nangmalam under Zobel gewog on December 23. It will benefit around 96 households and help youths to earn income by providing the AI community services. It is the 11th centre in the Dzongkhag with an aim to improve the cattle breed.

    Nangmalam community has 357 female cattle populations under the centre’s jurisdiction. The AI services will be provided by the trained community artificial insemination technician (CAIT).
