• Evaluating the Cooking and Eating Quality of a New Rice Variety through Organo-Leptic Test in RDC Bajo

    Untitled30 June, 2015, Bajo: RDC Bajo conducted an organo-leptic testing of a new rice variety, IR 28, on 30 of June 2015.  Organo-leptic testing is an analysis of the properties of food products by means of the sense organs. Organo-leptic testing is usually done by tasters on the basis of taste, odour, colour, texture and appearance. It is generally used worldwide to evaluate the quality of wines, tea, tobacco, chesse, butter and canned food. RDC Bajo used the method to determine the cooking and eating quality of IR 28 rice variety. The eating quality of rice has a direct relation with the consumer preference and therefore, it is important to test the acceptability of a new variety.  It is also a crucial variety trait which determines the spread and adoption of new varieties by the farmers.

    The organo-leptic test assessed the cooking and eating quality of IR 28 (an improved rice variety from IRRI due for release after extensively evaluated by RDC Bajo in Wangdue-Punakha valley) against IR 64 which is currently one of the best improved varieties grown in the mid-altitude regions of the country. Staff and ESPs of RDC Bajo participated in the rice quality test and ratings from 30 random samples were taken.  The test ratings were based on basic rice quality traits such as taste, texture, flufiness, softness (when cooked/cooled), aroma, colour and general appearance. The result showed that 60% of the respondants reported IR 28 as ‘better than IR 64’, while 27% rated as ‘similar to IR 64’ and only 13% rated ‘not better than   IR 64”.  Overall, IR 28 outscored IR 64 in terms of cooking and eating quality, thus paving way for possible release next year. Among the hundreds of improved rice germplasm evaluated at RDC Bajo in the last 6 years, IR 28 has consistently performed well in the mid altitude zone.

  • Dhur community attends Sustainable Rangeland management Training

    June 27, Bumthang: Farmers training on sustainable rangeland management practice is being conducted at Dhur under Chokkhortey Geog in Bumthang Dzongkhag. The main objective of the training is to create awareness among highland communities on importance of protecting rangelands which support the livelihood of the highlanders. The participants were introduced to application of various measures related to sustainable land management practice in degraded rangelands. After completion of training, highland community is expected to identify rangelands that are prone to degradation within their jurisdiction and implement SLMP technologies accordingly.

  • Workshop on Climate Smart Village


    The Council for RNR research of Bhutan Secretariat (CoRRB-S), MoAF, Thimphu conducted a five days’ [16th to 20th June 2015] workshop on “Identification and work-plan development for Climate Smart Village interventions” including field visits to climate smart initiatives in adjoining geogs of Phuentsholing. The workshop was meat to orient the RNR officials of Chukha Dzongkhag and extension officials of Lokchina and Darla Geogs on Climate Smart Agriculture.

    The CoRRB-S, over the next three years, will be initiating the concept of Climate Smart Agriculture, and establishing five Climate Smart Villages [CSV], in the East, East-Central and Southern Dzongkhags.  Following the international conventions and practices, the CSVs will test and validate agricultural Climate Change [CC] adaptation methodologies and interventions in an integrated manner with the aim to boost farmers ability to adapt to CC, manage risks and build resilience, and by this improve livelihoods and incomes and, where possible, reduce green house gas emissions to ensure solutions are sustainable. Focus will be on integrated actions – Weather -Smart, Carbon- Smart, Nitrogen -Smart, Energy -Smart, Knowledge-Smart (CGIAR -CCAFS approach).

  • Completion of Nature Guiding & Ecotourism Course at UWICE

    IMG_18421 May – 30 June, Bumthang. The first batch of two months course on “Nature Guiding & Ecotourism Course” which began from 1st May 2015 concluded today with certificate awarding ceremony. During the two-months course, trainees were taught basics in identification of plants, mammals, butterflies, and birds. They were also introduced to mist netting and banding of birds, besides the field excursion they undertook to gain hands-on experience in taxonomic skills.

    The certificate awarding ceremony was awarded by Mr. Tshering Tempa, Officiating Director, and was attended by faculties and staff of the institute. The officiating Director, on his keynote address, advised to the trainees to make the best use of knowledge and skills they had gained through this course in conserving the natural resources and also to make use in nature guiding & ecotourism.

    In collaboration with Maize Commodity Programme led by RNR RDC, Wengkhar and Agriculture sector, Sarpang with the financial support from the Department of Agriculture had implemented large scale hybrid maize production. The farmers of 11 geogs were supplied with 14metric tones of seeds to 1356 households focused on the wetland based spring maize production except Jigmecholing geog due to no demand from the farmers.
