• CNR develops Arboretum as a special tribute to 4th Druk Gyalpo’s 60th birth anniversary

DSC_001411 November, CNR, Lobesa: If Bhutan today is still among the top biological hotspots in the world, if major chunk of our land is still under forest cover, it’s all because of the farsighted vision of His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo. Hence, College of Natural Resources in Lobesa developed and established an Arboretum, a campus floristic garden, which is a befitting symbol of tribute to His Majesty’s 60th birth anniversary on 11 November this year.

The faculty members, in-service degree and diploma forestry students of the college, over a period of last three months, conceived and executed the Arboretum where, within the premises of the college, an area was delineated and planted with different species of plants. Some 230 seedlings consisting of 20 tree species from Bhutan’s native broadleaved forests were planted within the area of 3911 sq.m of land. The species planted includes Cassia spp., Quercus spp., Sisoo, Terminalia belerica, Mesus ferres, Gulmohar, Dendrocalamus spp, Ficus bengalensis etc. In addition, two gazebos as resting and contemplating stop points were constructed connected by the nature trail snaking within the Arboretum.

    Descending_Day1

Thursday, 13 November 2014 is a National Holiday in Bhutan to observe this very holy day- Lhabab Duechen or the Descending Day of Lord Buddha. Lhabab Duechen. is celebrated on the 22nd day of the 9th Lunar month of the Bhutanese calendar. The day is celebrated to mark the Anniversary of Lord Buddha’s descent from the realm of Heaven to Earth on this day.

History says that Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, and His mother expired after 7 days. Therefore 6 years after attaining enlightenment at the age of 41, He ascended to Tushita heaven (the Realm of the Divas), which is still part of Samsara (the cycle of birth, death and rebirth) on the 15th day of the 6th month of the Lunar calender to preach to his mother. He went there to teach his mother so she could break free from Samsara because he wanted to repay her kindness towards him.
