  • National Training Workshop on Evolutionary Plant Breeding 11-18 February 2019

    A week-long training workshop on Evolutionary Plant Breeding for the National Project Stakeholders is underway at Gelephu. The on-farm conservation Project on Evolutionary Plant Breeding “Use of genetic diversity and Evolutionary Plant Breeding for enhanced farmer resilience to climate change, sustainable crop productivity, and nutrition under rain-fed conditions” is supported by IFAD through Biodiversity International. It is an International project coordinated by Bioversity International, Rome and will be implemented in six countries (Bhutan, Nepal, Iran, Uganda, Ethiopia and Jordan). The project will focus on the conservation and sustainable use of rice and bean on-farm diversity in the proposed project sites exploiting the concept of evolutionary plant breeding.

    The objectives of the training workshop are to enhance the capacity of the national project stakeholders on evolving concepts of evolutionary plant breeding, on-Farm crop genetic diversity assessment and seed systems, and social ecological assessment. The training workshop is organized by the National Biodiversity Centre, Serbithang, with technical support from the International Project Coordinating Unit, the Bioversity International, Rome. It is attended by the participants from the Regional Agriculture Research and Development Centres and the extension officials from the proposed project sites. The project will be implemented in 6 sites covering five Dzongkhags representing four agro-ecological zone. The project will identify climate resilient technologies for conservation, development and sustainable use of crop diversity.

  • OIE PVS Pathway Training Workshop for effectively safeguarding Animal and Human Health

    The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in collaboration with Department of Livestock under Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan organized the Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway Training Workshop for South Asia and Mongolia from 12th – 15th February 2019 in Paro.Thirty four participants from the SAARC Member Countries, Mongolia, Canada, United States and Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations (FAO) attended the training. The resource persons for the training workshop were international PVS Experts and OIE staff from Tokyo and Paris.

    Dr. Tashi Samdup, the Director General, Department of Livestock and also currently the Vice President of the OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania represented the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests at the launch of the workshop.

    Hon’ble Lyonpo meet with 5th RBFE Committee member at Samdrup Jongkhar

    January 31-February 11: The Hon’ble Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor visited flower exhibition sites and monitored the ongoing preparations for 5th Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition (RBFE) in Samdrup Jongkhar. Meeting with the committee, His Excellency stressed on the importance of event and to live up to the objectives and expectations of His Majesty The King. Lyonpo also emphasized on the sustainability of the investment, sacrifices and effort nation has made for the event. His Excellency informed that the exhibition should not for the purpose of exhibition alone; the larger part of it is to be used as a platform to give meaning and purpose to Bhutanese people to live clean and contribute to nation building.
