• NBC analyses the genetic diversity and population structure of traditional horse breeds

    For landlocked Bhutan characterised by rugged terrain and harsh climatic conditions, the highly adapted traditional horse breeds played an unfailing role in country’s trade during the pre-modernisation era. It continues to play an important role in many parts of the country where motorable road has not yet reached. However, the horse population in the country is rapidly declining due to various factors including their diminishing utility. Reducing population size leads to inbreeding which in turn affects survival, performance and productivity. Assessment of genetic diversity is one of the tools to determine the status of the diversity and develop strategies for effective management of animal genetic resources.

    As the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) is mandated to promoting conservation and sustainable utilisation of biodiversity in particular of the traditional genetic diversity, a team from Animal Genetic Resources Program of NBC assessed the genetic diversity and population structure of Bhutanese traditional horses (Yuta, Boeta and Sharta)  using  the standard DNA microsatellite genotyping tools.

  • Statistics on import of major food items from India during Jan – Dec 2017

    This statistical release is based on analysis of import data sourced from Bhutan Trade Statistics 2016 and 2017 published by Department of Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Finance, Royal Government of Bhutan. It presents volume and value of import of major food items from India during the period Jan-Dec 2017, and the same for Jan-Dec 2016 is also presented for comparison, to give a sense of trend in import. Import of the same items from countries other than India was found negligible and hence not presented here.

  • LOAS certified products to hit the market

    The local organic assurance system (LOAS) certified products including Turmeric powder from Zhemgang, Bhutan Herbal Tea from Bumthang, Bhutan Green Tea from Trongsa and potato, garlic and carrot from Gasa launched on June 26 is expected to hit the market soon.

    The Hon'ble Sanam Lyonpo exploring one of the organic productsThe launched products were from Rangzhin Sonam Detshen in Gasa, Samdrupcholing Zangja Nymaley Tshogdey in Trongsa, Takabi Women’s Group and Dakpel Women’s Group in Zhemgang and Bhutan Herbal Tea in Bumthang who have registered with the National Organic Program (NOP) since 2016. They were trained on organic concepts, principles and practices and have committed to ensure the Bhutan Organic Standard (BOS).
