  • Dog Population Management Roadmap for Bumthang to reduce dog population

    Bumthang: The Department of Livestock (DoL) handed over the ownership of the Dog Population Management (DPM) Program to the Dzongkhag Administration, Bumthang on May 20 with a signing of the DPM roadmap between Dasho Dzongda and Chief Veterinary Officer of DoL. The main objective of the DPM roadmap is to sustain the DPM program undertaken in the Dzongkhag by reducing the population of free roaming dogs through enhanced Community Animal Birth Control and controlling the population by maintaining less than 5% of unsterilized dogs.

    The DPM program was conducted between March 15-April 30 in Thromde and four gewogs of Bumthang. A total of 2155 dogs (1473 stray and 682 pet dogs) were covered under the catch-neuter-vaccinate-release strategy. Out of 2155 dogs, 2084 dogs were sterilized and/or ear-notched.

  • Disseminating post harvest technologies

    Minimizing postharvest losses is critical to enhance food availability for distribution. Dissemination of postharvest technologies eliminate avoidable food losses. National Post Harvest Center (NPHC) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests which is located in Bondey, Paro provides agriculture post production services throughout the country. The Centre strives to provide efficient postproduction services, and has a pilot food processing plant, a post-harvest laboratory, cold stores, a refrigerated truck and a pack-house equipped with a PSF automatic apple grading equipment of approximately 3 MT per hour capacity. The technical programs under NPHC carries out any R&D on physiological aspects of fruits, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and herbs, cereals, etc.

The extraction of different natural resources products or forests products by NRDCL is categorized as timber; firewood & woodchips; stone and sand. Timber category consists of production and disposal of timber for rural, commercial, dzong and Lhakhang construction. It is further categorized as Logs, blocks, poles and sawn timber. Firewood & woodchips category consists of firewood mostly used for cooking in institutions, schools, armed forces, road construction and residential house warming purposes.
