• GFPR 2019 launch from IFPRI

    Nestled in the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan places top priority on the happiness of its people, tracking well-being with its Gross National Happiness index. The world can learn from this concept, said experts at the Bhutan launch of IFPRI’s 2019 Global Food Policy Report (GFPR) launch in Thimphu April 29. Speakers laid out the opportunities and challenges in meeting the goals of food and nutrition security to achieve “happiness” and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    The launch started with the traditional Marchang (literally, Mar means butter and Chang means alcohol)ceremony which involves offering alcohol to the root and lineage gurus and guardian deities, invoking their blessings to remove any obstacles so that the work (the launch of the GFPR and the collaboration between IFPRI and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, in this case) can be fulfilled successfully.

  • AI refresher course completes for extension staff of west-central region

    22 April-5 May, Tsirang: Twenty five livestock staff of west-central region attended two weeks refresher course on artificial insemination (AI) in Mendrelgang. The course provided them an opportunity to get hands on training on latest insemination procedures, thawing of semen, proper loading of AI gun, application of right AI techniques, proper handling of frozen semen and care/handling of Liquid Nitrogen needed for cryopreservation of frozen semen.

  • Enhancing public-private-partnership through cattle breeding

    Tsirang: Geared towards providing uninterrupted Artificial Insemination (AI) services to the general public under public-private partnership for cattle breed improvement and dairy development in the country, the early school leavers who are referred as  “Community based AI Technician” (CAIT) attended AI training in Barshong from 9-30 April. The intervention directly complements the objective of the Department of Livestock to enhance employment and income generation opportunities in rural areas.

  • Climate smart livestock production for youth entrepreneurship

    Zhemgang: The Regional Livestock Development Centre (RLDC), Zhemgang and Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Zhemgang organised a consultative meeting of stakeholders to identify  youth, form group and develop management plan for “Youth Entrepreneurship in Climate Smart Green Forage Production and Conservation for Sustained Livestock Productivity” in Shingkhar gewog.

    The project is being implemented to provide employment to youth residing idle in the gewog and ultimately mitigate rural-urban migration. The project is expected to achieve gainful youth employment in fodder and dairy production, utilise private barren and government reserve lands and enhance availability of forage crops for sustainable feeding and forage-dairy business.
