• Himalica program to enhance rural livelihoods in Barshong

    24-25 September, Thimphu: A Himalica program to enhance rural livelihoods and climate change adaptation will be soon implemented in an identified pilot area, Barshong.  It is one of the remotest geogs under Tsirang Dzongkhag with five chiwogs and 231 households where people mainly depend on orange and vegetables for cash income.

    The program managed by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal would work to reduce poverty, enhance sustainable land and water management while also facilitating the equitable and well being of both women and men there.

  • Caterpillar fungus growth in Tibet nearing exhaustion, warn Chinese experts

    (TibetanReview.net, Sep25, 2013)  The growth of caterpillar fungus, popular as a miracle herbal drug and supplement growing on alpine soil 3,000 to 5,000 above sea level, could die out on the Tibetan Plateau in two decades as a result of over-exploitation, China’s official Xinhua news agency Sep 24 cited Chinese experts as saying. Its seasonal harvest has not only been a rare source of good income for local Tibetans but there have also been deadly clashes among them at places over harvesting territory.

  • BAFRA prepares for Regulation of Genetically Modified Organism

    2A 10 days training workshop through the support of National Biosafety Framework Project under Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority on risk assessment, risk management and risk communication of Genetically Modified food, feed and plants is being conducted from 23rd September 2013 at Wangchuk Resort, Taba, Thimphu.

    The training is being conducted in two different components – first week of the training is on risk assessment/management of GM food and feed for which an international expert Dr. Dr.Jansen Van Rijssen from South Africa is filled in as the resource person. Dr. Rijssen involvement in GMO included food safety and risk assessments, development of legislation and guidelines, participation in several Codex Alimentarius committees, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) task force for the safety of novel food and feeds, the OECD working group on harmonization in legislative oversight in biotechnology; and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) advisory committee on biotechnology and biosafety. Her experience in work with GMOs stretches over more than 20 years.
