Paddy Plantation below Dechenphug initiated by MoAF

May 28, Thimphu: As part of the land development program, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests initiated a paddy plantation on 3 acres of area below Dechenphug Monastery, Thimphu, today.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the area till date was left fallow possibly due to wildlife issues and lack of support among others. Officials shared that it took them almost a month to prepare the land suitable for plantation.

Following the plantation, the areas have been covered with around 600 metres of electric fencing, the most effective solution in keeping away the wild animals.

A total of 20 acres in Dechenphug is currently under the land development program, the remaining areas will be covered in the next phase. They will be used primarily for paddy cultivation but some areas based on topography will be used for fruit trees.

This initiative is aimed to recover the paddy field lost for urban development in the past in Thimphu while also helping towards achieving the food self-sufficiency. Similar initiatives are being also implemented across the country.
