17 May 2017, Thimphu: A one-day Stakeholder Consultation Meeting was organised by the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests on the following Draft Food Standards (mandatory standards or technical regulation) at the Terma Linca Resort and Spa, Babesa yesterday on 16 May 2017.

The objectives of the meeting were to seek feedback from both public and private key stakeholders on draft standards developed by a local consultancy firm (Karseng Consultancy Limited) and to create awareness on the process of development of food standards. The standards being developed on a priority basis include for pesticide residue in foods, heavy metals in foods, mycotoxins in foods, food additives, local cheese, milk, butter, table eggs, honey, veterinary drug residues in foods and for general fruit juices.

The draft standards will be presented to the National Codex Committee for technical endorsement and to the National Food Quality and Safety Commission for final approval and adoption. These standards will ensure transparency in the enforcement of regulatory measures and facilitate safe and fair trade both domestically and internationally.
