June 3, Thimphu: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF) and Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) to strengthen a technical cooperation in the fields of biosafety, bioprospecting and biotechnological advancements. The Agriculture Secretary, Dasho Rinzin Dorji and Dr. Jang-Seong Kim, the KRIBB President signed the MoU in presence of the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor.
The MoU covers the overall safety management of genetically modified organisms/living modified organisms, efficient use of biological resources, agriculture development through biotechnological advancement and research related activities among others.
The MoU will serve as an umbrella agreement for the Ministry and within the MoU framework; the specific contractual agreements will be signed between the respective agencies of KRIBB and Ministry. The National Biodiversity Centre will sign the Access and Benefit Sharing agreement with International Biological Material Resource Centre and its partners while BAFRA would formalise its collaboration with the Korea Biosafety Clearing House.
According to a spokesperson, through the MoU, the Ministry will enhance the bio-discovery research and support in bioprospecting as well as open the opportunities to tap on the resources and knowledge of biotechnological advancement in agriculture. Further, the collaboration will help to establish Korea Biosafety Clearing House a reference lab for biosafety as well as strengthen capacity and technology in biosafety.
The MoU is valid for 5 years from the date of its signing and may be renewed based on the consent of both parties.
A four member delegation from KRIBB is in the country to sign the MoU among others from 3-6 June. KRIBB is a research institute established since 1985 under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Republic of Korea.
