June 17, Mongar: The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests observed the World Day to Combat Desertification in Mongar at two sites, Thridangbi chiwog in Saling and Drangmaling chiwog in Tsamang to create awareness amongst farming communities on sustainable land management (SLM).
The day with a theme, ‘Let’s grow the future together’ saw around 230 participants including farmers and officials. Sixty acres of land (35 acres in Thridangbi and 25 acres in Drangmaling) was brought under the SLM interventions and planted fodder hedgerows and fruit plants.
It was organised by the National Soil Services Centre (NSSC) and Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector, Mongar with fund from GEF-LDCF.
The day was also celebrated in Wangphu gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar by developing 70 acres of land through the SLM practices. It was attended by 290 participants and funded by BTFEC.
June 17 is considered important as it focuses mainly on land and reminds the general public on how important and necessary it is to take care of our limited land resources.
