October 7-8, Thimphu: The third annual Jomolhari Mountain Festival was held at Dangochong, near Jomolhari base camp. It was organised by Jigme Dorji National Park in collaboration with the communities of Soe Yutoe, Soe Yaksa, Nubri and Jomolhari School. The Director General of the Department of Forest and Park Services graced the festival as the Chief guest where more than 150 people from the Jomolhari region gathered to witness and participate in the event. Besides the local people, the turnout of the foreign tourist for the festival has increased as compared to the previous years.
As a part of the festival event, the Royal Institute of Health Sciences, Thimphu through the support from the Bhutan Foundation organized a free health check up services to the people. Having the need to walk all the way to Paro and Thimphu which takes almost two days to reach the nearest hospital, the health check up program was well received by the local communities including the park officials.
The festival was expected to promote ecotourism opportunities in the Jomolhari region, showcase local culture and tradition, encourage yak herding and promote dairy products and enhance community participation for biodiversity conservation.
The festival was funded by the Tourism Council of Bhutan.
