December 12, Thimphu: The Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Mr. Jaideep Sarkar called on the Hon’ble Sanam Lyonpo, Yeshey Penjor. The Agriculture Secretary, Dasho Rinzin Dorji was also present.
Their Excellencies discussed about further support required to strengthen livestock, irrigation and phyto-sanitary capacity. Lyonpo shared that one of the Ministry’s priorities is to achieve rice self-sufficiency that depends on a good irrigation facilities. ‘The Ministry will focus on developing deep irrigation system for dry land farming’, he said.
Issues related to export and exit points at border for agriculture products were also discussed. The Ambassador assured to resolve the issue soon for farmers. He added that infrastructure development is important to connect the market and help them. He said that the Ministry should encourage more entrepreneurs to explore better opportunities.
Their Excellencies appreciated the strong friendship and cooperation shared by two countries. The Ambassador assured to offer continued support to the Ministry including in technical aspects.
GoI has been associated with Bhutan’s development since the start of its first five year plan in 1961 and GoI continues to be Bhutan main development partner. During the 11th five year plan, GoI supported the RNR sector with a budget of Nu. 1.12 billion to improve irrigation, livestock, commercial vegetable production, agriculture marketing and bio-security system in the country.
