18 September, Sarpang: It was a dream for Bishnu Maya Rai and her spouse Kisherman Rai of Samteling geog, Sarpang Dzongkhag, when the Prime Minister of Bhutan visited their home on 16 September 2015. They were overwhelmed and it was all thanks to their pigs that made the visit of Lyonchen happen. The family has been venturing to create one of the biggest private piggery farms with a shed capacity of 10 breeding units and 100 fattener units. At present their farm has 85 pigs excluding the recently farrowed sucklers from three sows.
“During the last 14 months of farming I earned a little more than seven lakh ngultrums from the sale of piglets and pork, and my net profit is almost 100%”, Kisharman proudly answered to His Excellency’s question. The pigs are fed with distillery waste product from the Bhutan Centennial Distillery located close by his farm.
Lyonchen instructed the entrepreneur and the National Piggery Development Centre (NPiDC) to maintain the pork quality especially from local pigs which is lean in nature. He also assured to link the local pork producer with the Five Star Amankora Resort in Paro.
The NPiDC, Department of Livestock in Gelephu shall now work out not only for quantity but also the quality of pork to fulfill the lean meat demand of the consumers as directed. Meanwhile, Kisharman Rai plans to lease government vacant land to expand his farm through BOiC/ BDBL loan.
It was an occasion of great moral boost for the staff of the NPiDC and Dzongkhag Livestock sector who just until recently were demotivated due to the recent open criticism from the public in carrying out livestock production activities in larger scale. The Hon’ble Prime Minister’s visit made everything bright again.
