Hon’ble Agriculture Minister, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji attended the 33rd FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific’ held in Putrajaya, Malaysia from March 10-11, 2016 at the invitation of H.E Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Minister for Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Malaysia. The biennial conference was organized by FAO together with Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Malaysia.
The conference was attended by Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and delegates from 46 member countries in the region. The conference was preceded by Senior Officers meeting from March 7-9, 2016 at the same venue. The conference highlighted the important roles Asia and Pacific needed to play in meeting the SDGs as the region is one of the most populous regions in the world with high rate of hunger. The Asia and the Pacific region is home to 490 million people who still do not have enough to eat, representing 62% of the world’s chronically hungry people.
The discussions most specifically focused on the state of agriculture across the region, including future prospects and emerging issues in the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); revitalizing the rural economy through enhanced linkages between small-scale agricultural production and value chains; promoting national nutrition policies and investments, and integrating nutrition objectives into food and agriculture policy, program design and implementation; and ‘blue growth.
The conference closed with an emphasis on supporting SDGs, improving nutrition and countering threats to agriculture from climate change.
The Hon’ble Minister also held bilateral meetings with the Deputy Director General, Kundhavi Kadiresan on 10 March and with the Director General, José Graziano da Silva on 11th March 2016.
The Hon’ble Minister discussed range of issues with ADG and DG from fielding Dr. Kinley Dorji from FAO to RGoB to help MoAF in preparation of the 12th FYP to enhancing FAO presence in the country. The Director General consented to support Hon’ble Minister’s proposal and asked to develop proposals together with FAO contact person in regional office, Bangkok.
The Hon’ble Minister also paid a visit to Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and met with Director General, Datuk Dr Sharif Haron and other officials. Hon’ble Lyonpo discussed several issues and explored how MARDI may be in a position to help enhance technical capacity of MoAF personnel. Hon’ble Lyonpo also visited the stingless bee honey production at MARDI.
