November 9, Thimphu: The Hon’ble Chairman of the Druk Holding Investments (DHI), Dasho Sangay Khandu handed over the raised forest plantations of various species having commercial value to the Hon’ble Agriculture Secretary, Dasho Tenzing Dendup in commemoration to the 60th Birth Anniversary of the 4th Druk Gyalpo.
From a total of 4206.86 acres of recent plantation, a total of 2177.83 acres of established plantation was handed over to the Department of Forest and Park Services.
The Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited (NRDCL) has been carrying out the reforestation activities since its establishment within areas where timber has been harvested and also in barren and degraded areas within and outside the forest management units. The NRDCL press release highlights the highest plantation area of 1510.28 acres in Wang region followed by Rinpung region with 174.11 acres.
Further to meet the future demand for timber in the country and grow economical/ commercial timber species based on the local climatic conditions, NRDCL initiated the plantation program on Government Reserved Forest mainly in degraded and barren areas across the country.
NRDCL also produced seedling to meet the demand for the departmental plantation and local supply. In order to raise good quality seedling in the desired quantities, NRDCL has established 11 nurseries across the country. NRDCL produced around 878,296 numbers of seedlings during 2009-2014.
Also present in the event were the DHI Board of Directors, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Samtse; Dasho Thrompon, Thimphu and senior officials from the Ministry.
