10 February, Thimphu: HE Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, Ministr for Agriculture and Forests launched the ‘Guideline for Facilitation of Contractual Supply of RNR Products by Farmers Groups to Institutes’ in the presence of Mr. Tom Dreksen, Managing Director for Agriculture, SNV and other officials from the ministry and SNV.
The guideline was published considering the success of farmers groups and also their contractual supply of RNR products, so that the approach could be replicated in other areas.
The guideline is a guide to both the educational institutes and farmers groups while signing contract on the supply of RNR products and also to guide for production and supply.
The contractual supply of RNR products is a part of the vegetable value chain program in the east, which is part of the IFAD-funded Market Access and Growth Intensification Project for the six eastern dzongkhags of Bhutan. Vegetables amounting to Nu. 20.6m was sold in 2013 by 1517 households in 114 farmers groups, of which Nu.7.15m was obtained through contractual supply of RNR products to 31 educational institutes.
This approach is in line with the government’s target to become self sufficient, in this approach locally produced RNR products will largely replace the cheaper Indian RNR products.
The program of contractual supply initially beagn with the signing of MoU between Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture and Forest on 19 April 2012 to pilot supply RNR products to educational institutes by farmers groups.
