Five companies certified by ISO 22000:2005

2 July Thimphu. Hon’ble Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­, Minister for Ministry of Agriculture and Forests awarded the ISO 22000:2005 certificates to five companies namely Bhutan Agro Industry Limited, Thimphu; Bhutan Milk and Agro Private Limited, Phuentsholing; Druk Air In-flight Catering, Druk Air Corporation Limited, Paro; Terma Linca Resort and Spa, Thimphu and Zimdra Food Pvt. Limited, Phuentsholing.

ISO 22000:2005 is a food safety management system designed to enable organisations to control food safety hazards along the food chain in order to ensure that food is safe for consumption.  It also includes interactive communication system approach to Food Safety Management (FSM), Pre-requisite Programmes and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).

The scope of ISO 22000:2005 is the entire food chain involving the farm to fork approach to food safety. ISO 22000 certification system is currently being applied in all modern food industries and it has already drawn huge interest amongst customer/consumer as it specifically deals with food safety with its standard at international reach.

The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) as the National Food Inspectorate in the country strongly advocates and promotes the application of ISO 22000:2005 system to as many food establishment/industries as possible so that all food produced and served in the country are ensured of safety and at the same time increase the consumer confidence and market access for foods produced in Bhutan.

The event highlighted the increasing importance of food safety in this era of globalised trade with increased human and food traffic and expressed the government’s high regard to providing safe and wholesome food for the customer. ‘ I look forward many other food business would come forward for such kind of certification  in the years to come considering the benefits to both for food business operators and consumers’ stated Hon’ble Lyonpo.

Finally the five companies were congratulated for having successfully met the requirement of ISO 22000 which has helped gained added reputation with enhanced market access and consumer confidence for their products and services both at national and international levels.

Hon’ble Lyonpo acknowledged the efforts and enthusiasm of Mr. Karma Dorji, Director General of BAFRA and his dedicated team for taking forward this initiative. Similarly the Minister also thanked UNIDO for both their financial and technical support extended to the country and assured that ISO 22000 will help enhance livelihood of Bhutanese people in pursuit of development philosophy, Gross National Happiness.
