The board members are the heads from the Department of Public Health, Department of Trade, Department of Revenue and Customs, Bureau of Law and Order, Department of Agriculture, Department of Livestock, Department of Forest and Park Services, National Biodiversity Centre and BAFRA. The Board also has a high-level representative from the National Environment Commission and Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Biosafety Act of Bhutan 2015 establishes the National Biosafety Board as the highest decision making body for issues related to biosafety. The meeting was held to apprise the esteemed members on the biosafety activities being carried out by BAFRA and review the Biosafety Rules and Regulations 2017 for endorsement.
The Board was presented with an update on the implementation of National Biosafety Framework Project, preliminary GMO pilot survey as part of the regular monitoring and surveillance activity, mass awareness programmes on biosafety regulatory requirement in 20 Dzongkhags of Bhutan and Biotechnology Laboratory at the National Food Testing Laboratory, Yusipang.
