In their inaugural address, the Dashos stated that about 70% of our population is dependent on agriculture as their main source of livelihood. Considering its importance, the Royal Government has been making concerted efforts in supporting the sector in all the development plans. Despite many program interventions, the farming communities are constrained by lack of access to quality and reliable farm inputs, poor infrastructure and market access for their farm produce and acute shortage of farm labour. To address these issues, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest has come up with a noble approach “Farm Shop/Sanam Tshongkhang”, a semi business venture for greater social cause, which will be established in all the Gewogs. The vendorship for the operations of the Sanam Tshongkhang is currently given to the Food Corporation of Bhutan Ltd (FCB).
The three functions of the Sanam Tshongkhang are: a Buy Back Guarantee under which farmers are given guaranteed market outlet for their local RNR produce; Retail farm inputs and farm machinery hiring services and Retail basic food and other essential items.
These two are the third Sanam Tshongkhang inaugurating and numbers of Farm Shops has gone up to four in the country. The launching of the first farm shop was done at Sephu Gewog and the second at Chumey Gewog.
The Dashos mentioned that they have full hope that this Sanam Tshongkhang will greatly help in helping the rural farming communities in the RNR production as well as in the marketing of their products.
This farm shop is also dedicated to the 60th Birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
In conclusion, the Dashos reiterated that the objective of the Farm Shops is to transform our farming from subsistence to commercial through increased production with guaranteed markets, better provision of the necessary farm inputs, services and basic household items at fair price. The Dashos requested the public to make best use of these services and wish the service providers the best of luck in this noble endeavour.
