The FAO would also take this opportunity to inform you about the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) Wangari Maathai Award. It was first launched in 2012 to honour the legacy of this extraordinary woman who championed forest issues around the world. The Award seeks to recognize extraordinary individuals for their outstanding contributions to forests and people. The CPF Wangari Maathai Award is supported by the following CPF members: CBD, CIFOR, FAO, GEF, ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC, UNFF and the World Bank.
The awardee of the 2014 edition of the Award was just selected. The awardee will receive a cash prize of USD 20,000 along with international recognition of their outstanding contributions to preserve, restore and sustainably manage forests and to raise awareness of the key role forests play in supporting local communities, rural livelihoods, women and the environment.
