July 10, Thimphu: The Livestock Department will continue the dog population management activities for next three years with a fund support of Nu 10.23M. For this, the third phase of the dog population management and rabies control project was launched by the Hon’ble Agriculture Lyonpo, Yeshey Dorji and Dr. Andrew Rowan, the CEO for Humane Society International (HSI) at Terma Linca Resort.

The Ministry approved the project following the success of the earlier two phases which covered 60993 dogs and 3354 cats in six years (2009-20015) through a catch neuter-vaccinate release protocol controlling the increasing dog population.

The project collaborating partner, HSI has also committed to provide a fund support of USD 92,719 or Nu 5, 563,140 for three years. The project is awaiting final approval from the Government and is expected to be operational from July 2015.

For dog population management sustainability and visible post- project phase, a paradigm shift in technique will be put in place whereby the concerned Dzongkhags, Thromdes and local stakeholders takes ownership of the programs with technical backstopping from the Livestock Department. Further, all the Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospitals (DVHs) will have a fully operation theatre and a trained team to carry out the community animal birth control activities at both DVH and geogs.
