August 5, Bumthang: The Director for Department of Agriculture (DoA) accompanied by senior officials met with successful farmer groups. This was the first visit of Director after being appointed as the head for DoA.
The team first visited Phuntsho Rabten Kewa Tshogpa. It was established in 2011 with seven members. They cultivate and process potato chips and market them in Bumthang. One of the group members said they sell around 1000 packets of chips with an approximate earning of Nu. 30,000/month.
Another successful farmer group visited was Sanam Kuenphen Rangzhin Tsoesay Tshogpa, a women group with nine members. They focus on production of organic vegetables.
The third visited group was Sanam Chigthuen Rang Tshogpa with 10 members. It provides Bumthang’s indigenous organic food. The group’s common commodity is buckwheat and currently they have around 7 acres of land under buckwheat cultivation. Since bucket flour have a major health benefits, the flour from group have also gained popularity and is in high demand.
The team also visited the Potato Research Centre and National Seed Centre and met with Dzongkhag agriculture and extension staff.
