May 25-31, Paro: The Dzongkhag Livestock Sector with the technical and financial support from the National Dairy Development Centre (NDDC), Yusipang organised the training program on ‘Hygienic milk processing’ for the members of the five dairy groups.
The training imparted the basic skills and knowledge on hygienic milk processing to all the dairy group members who contribute bulk of the milk that are consumed by the Thimphu and Paro urbanities.
The participants were briefed on the current status of hygienic milk processing in Paro and the gaps between the current practices and the standard requirements for clean milk production. Rampant use of plastic containers, mixing of the evening and morning milk, lack of regular milk testing by the milk collectors were some of the major issues that came out so strongly in the training. The participants were also briefed on the standard requirements of milk processing and some basic practices that the members should practice to contribute to clean milk production.
A BAFRA representative also highlighted some of the basic rules and regulations pertaining to clean milk production.
The Dzongkhag has ten dairy groups out of which six groups are actively involved in milk production and marketing. They produce about 500 MT of milk annually for Thimphu and Paro.
