22 June Thimphu. Nature Recreation and Ecotourism Division (NRED), Department of Forests and Park Services organized a cleaning campaign along Phajoding trail in collaboration with Phajoding monks and Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators (ABTO). A total of 110 volunteers: Phajoding monks, tour operators, tour guides, hotels and youth volunteers from Clean Bhutan participated at the cleaning campaign.
The campaign aimed to create awareness on waste management along the Phajoding trek with special focus to the most probable trek users such as tour operators, guides, monks and local visitors.
The volunteers hiked up to Phajoding picking up waste along the trek and also around the monastery. At the end of the day more than 40 bags of waste were collected. The waste mostly comprised of plastics covers, pet bottles, chips packet, dalda wrappers and others. All these waste were segregated and transported to appropriate dumping areas with the help of Thimphu Thromde.
Taking advantage of the gathering of all the relevant agencies, issues on waste management along the trekking routes inside forest areas were also discussed. Most of the participants expressed their concerns on waste issues and agreed that it requires collective effort for waste management.
Finally NRED took the privilege to thank the Association of Bhutan Tour Operators, Phajoding Lam and monks, all the Volunteers and Thimphu Thromde for their support as this insured the success of the day and will result in a closer working relationship between NRED and these organizations.
